How can it be that
even today there are still people dying of hunger? Condemned to
illiteracy? Lacking the most basic medical care? Without a roof over their
heads? . . . Christians must learn to make their act of faith in Christ by
discerning His voice in the cry for help that rises from this world of
poverty.

Poverty in America
Catholic Campaign for Human Development
CCHD assists people to rise out of poverty through
empowerment programs that foster self-sufficiency. These projects have
helped low-income people to change their lives by creating opportunity
where none existed before and providing the means for poor people to find
solutions to their community's problems.
By helping people to take a
meaningful role in the decisions and actions that affect their lives, CCHD
empowers poor people to move beyond poverty.

National Coalition for the Homeless
The National Coalition for the Homeless is a national
network of people who are currently experiencing or who have experienced
homelessness, activists and advocates, community-based and faith-based
service providers, and others committed to a single mission. The mission
of NCH is to end homelessness. NCH is committed to creating the systemic
and attitudinal changes necessary to prevent and end homelessness. At the
same time, the organization works to meet the immediate needs of people
who are currently experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of doing
so. NCH takes as our first principle of practice that people who are
currently experiencing homelessness or have formerly experienced
homelessness must be actively involved in all of our work.
