“Multi-Cultural Ministry in your Parish ” pgs. 14-15 of the April/May Today’s Parish Minister. This was a good article that addresses the similarities and diversity of multi-cultural parishes (St Joe and Paul being a strong example of this type of Parish). John spoke of how some of the differences taking you out of your comfort zone, basically because you are unfamiliar with the language and customs of that culture. He shared a story of his trip to Mexico with his brother and trying to purchase gasoline, any one who has traveled to a foreign country may have had similar experiences. John also spoke of some diversity and coming together as a church community. A discussion followed where Ron Greene asked Fr. John and Juan about their experiences with cultural outreach to others in their own homeland. Tammi Schneider spoke of some differences but the common denominator that we all want and are capable of giving and receiving love, we can reach out to others in this way. Good comments and thoughtful discussion.
Reports regarding Youth, Hispanic and Elderly ministries.
Laura gave the Youth Ministry report. She let the council know about the picnic and party for Ken on his last day that was May 31st. She also informed the PPC of the ACT Members trying to do some (1 or 2) activities over the summer to keep things going with the CHRISTeens. We will continue to pray for the future of Youth Ministry and keep Ken in prayer as he studies and pursues his counseling career. The ACT will be meeting with Fr. Carl soon about Youth Ministry.
Chris gave the Hispanic Ministry report. Chris let us know that children will be making their First Holy Communion on June 14th. The last day for CCD will be June 7th. The faith community outreach and home visits will increase during the summer. There will be a young adult meeting that will be planning some different events, including; Feast of Corpus Christi- with a procession with Eucharist and different altars. The date for this event is not decided as of yet because First Holy Communion being on Corpus Christi. There are several baptisms coming up, a Hispanic wedding took place at church about a week ago. Chris made a comment that there were differences in regards to some customs and other areas but we are all one Parish at Sts. Joseph and Paul
The Elderly Ministry report was tabled until the next PPC meeting.
At this point the meeting skipped ahead to an item of New Business. The Finance Report included the approval of a new budget, given by Pat Abel (Finance/Stewardship Chairperson). Pat explained differences from last year’s numbers to this year’s numbers. Tammi Schneider asked about the collection envelopes. Could we hand them out at Church instead of having the expense of mailing them? Fr Carl commented that when they are sent it is a reminder to parishioners. Alan said that it helps keep in touch with the parishioners that may move. Tony Kraus asked if we would make the budget for this year and so far it looks like we will make the budget. The budget is just a guideline. The increase of the budget for 2009-2010 is 3.9% and it is usually a 10% increase. Ron asked about the residence expense, this is for the food and board for Fr. Carl and Fr. John (basically keeping them up in the rectory). Tony asked some questions about the increase in health insurance. Pat let the PPC know that we could call him for any questions about the proposed budget. The PPC then voted on the proposed budget. Mike Hagan gave the motion to pass the budget and Ron Greene seconded, the budget was unanimously approved. Fr. Carl briefly mentioned the catholic school subsidy and our Parish’s contribution. Thanks to Finance Committee that did a wonderful job putting together the budget.
V. Old Business
A. Fr. Carl gave a report on the CRE/DRE position- one qualified individual
has applied for the position. He explained know the Ad hoc committee will meet and determine the way the interview will be conducted. Fr. spoke of the CRE/DRE position being ¾ time DRE and ¼ time Youth Minister/Facilitator. We will move forward with the interview process and then take it from there.
B. Tammi Schneider spoke about Evangelization outreach to 20 and 30 year
old parishioners. She stated that a planning group of 20 and 30 year olds’ has recently sent out a letter to parishioners that fall in this age group and it gives them a personal invitation. The group is in the beginning stages of planning to get this age group more involved in different things that go on in our parish. Fr. Carl thanked the group for their work with this outreach. Tony asked Chris about the possibility of the Hispanic young adult group coming together with this group. This group reaches out to the married and non-married within the aforementioned age range.
Alan Simms led a brief update on the Capital Campaign. The Parish has had 66 responses on lengthening the Capital Campaign. There have been 59 financial commitment and 7 prayer commitments. The Lord is driving the bus!
Fr. Carl gave the Good Samaritan Home update. There has been a family renting the home for the last 2 months for $1000 per month. We will look for a family in need. Fr. explained for incoming PPC members that the Good Samaritan home was originally set up as a refugee ministry. He said that there is a refugee office in Bowling Green and that they are seeking an office in Owensboro, however this process is currently caught up in red tape. The Good Samaritan Home has been used recently for families and individual in needs. He explained that we currently have a certified copy of the deed and that April has put together a list of in-kind and monetary donations for the house. He also let the PPC know that we have no social concerns committee at this time. Tammi Schneider asked if the rent for the home was $1000 dollars a month for any tenant and Fr. Carl explained that families in need would be able to occupy the home regardless of rent payment ability.
