Opening Prayer: Ron Greene led us in a prayer that involved thinking about the things that challenge us in our spiritual life. This was a continuance from last months opening prayer. Ron gave each PPC member a small box last month, thanks to all who shared their box issues. II. Approval of Previous Minutes David Danhauer made the motion to pass the minutes from the January 5th meeting, Mike Hagan 2nd the motion and the minutes were unanimously approved. Continuing Education: Laura Baker led the Council in continuing education that was taken from the Jan 2009 Issue of Today’s Parish Minister “Imagine! Sacramental Catechesis &Lifelong Faith Formation” Laura spoke briefly and gave a summary of the piece. In a nut shell the article spoke of including the entire Parish in the celebration of the sacraments. Fr. Carl asked about how the Parish was doing as a whole in including all in the celebration. Debbie Luedke and Carol Alvey mentioned that it would be nice to spotlight in someway the children, youth, and adults that are receiving each sacrament in an individual way. The council agreed that we do a pretty good job, however we are always improving the things that we do in our Church community. The article was good and challenged us to celebrate sacramental catechesis and faith formation by thinking in a very inclusive way. There was a change in Agenda to a New Business item. Tony introduced Kristin Butler who is currently serving our Parish as a consultant in matters of RCIA, RCIC, Women’s Spirituality Ministry, Baptismal Prep Ministry, and advising and recommending for the current search for the DRE / CRE position that is currently vacant. Kristin gave the council a handout that laid out information she gathered from interviewing staff, parish council and lay leaders of our Church. (Please refer to handout) Kristin discussed the overall views of lay leaders of the church in regards to qualifications for the new DRE/CRE. Kristin mentioned that the qualities sought in this new hire (by those interviewed) included; that the person maybe female (for balance of staff), good leadership, provide adult education, tend to pastoral needs and continue the senior ministry. Fr. Carl commented that the needs specified that the position require more education than just a certificate. Kristin commented that this position would require a good theological foundation. Fr. Carl spoke about moving forward with the search for DRE/CRE and giving this process to an Ad hoc committee that could move forward with the process of looking at educational requirements, job description and considering the budget in terms of a salary for this position. There was consensus from the PPC that this should move forward to an Ad hoc committee. IV. Hispanic Ministry, Youth Ministry, and Senior Citizen Update: Sr. Fran gave a report on Hispanic Ministry. Sr Fran let the council know that the Hispanic community is preparing for the “Veri Cruces” or “live way of the Cross” which will take place on Good Friday. Sr. Fran spoke of the “Veri Cruces” as a wonderful and holy experience. Sr. Fran hopes that more parishioners will be able to watch and experience “Veri Cruces” this year, although she is aware that the time may coincide with other church services for Good Friday. Sr. Fran also let us know that there is a belated Christmas party being planned for probably Mardi Gras. Sr. explained that the feeling of community and fellowship is really growing with our Hispanic brothers and sisters. Ken gave a brief report on CHRISTeens Youth ministry. The middle school youth will be having a lock in and that the youth house is coming long nicely. He commented on the kids talking with each other more openly about their ongoing faith formation. He also spoke of a ”Youth House Open House”, and naming the youth house. Fr. Carl spoke about Senior Citizens Ministry. He states that Senior Citizen Pot Luck is growing but that it needs some fire under it. Fr. asked for the PPC to pray for Trish Logsdon. A tree has fallen on her house in the recent ice storm and she is currently staying in a shelter. Ms. Logsdon is very frail and will need help with the tree and her living arrangements. Fr. Carl may offer the Good Samaritan home to Ms. Logsdon if her family is agreeable. Please keep her in prayer. Old Business The Ad hoc committee for the nomination and election process of PPC, discussion on changes in constitution was led by Debbie Luedke. (Please refer to “Constitution of Sts. Joseph and Paul Parish Pastoral Council”, distributed at the meeting.) The changes in Articles 1- 6 are finished and ready to be voted on. David Danhauer explained the process of accepting the changes to the constitution. The Ad hoc Committee presents the changes as the first motion and then a 2nd motion is needed to approve the changes. Ron Greene brought up discussion on a wording change for Article VI, letter c. David explained that we vote on this wording change and the same rules for change apply as explained previously. Connie Caceres, 2nd the motion for changes in wording. The motion was passed to change wording. 1st motion made by Ad hoc committee, 2nd motion made by Ron Greene, motion passed to change Article VI. The Ad hoc committee will meet again to continue to work on the changes. Good Samaritan Home Update given by Alan Simms. The home has been winterized and checked on regularly, there was no damage to the home from the ice storm. As mentioned previously Fr. Carl will approach Trish Logsdon about the possibility of her staying at the Good Samaritan Home, while she awaits repair of her home that sustained considerable damage in the recent ice storm. There has been no word from Washington DC, at this time, to update any legality or legislation. Tom Hayden gave an update on the Ministry to the sick and dying. Tom asked the PPC about ideas they may have about putting together a committee or volunteer group to minister to sick and dying. Fr. Carl suggested putting something in the bulletin about having people volunteer for bringing in food to homes of the sick in our Church community. Debbie Luedke asked if Tom had spoken with Peggy Wilson about the problems that may have come up with this ministry before. Tom stated that he had tried to get in touch with Peggy but as of this meeting has not been able to do so. Fr. Carl suggested a helping bulletin board at church where parishioners could sign up to help. Fr will mention this at mass and consult with the Seniors of Church; they can possibly take charge of this Ministry and maybe name it. Alan mentioned that the seniors could take ownership in this Ministry. Good discussion. Stewardship process is going well but will be postponed a week because of the recent ice storm. Childcare committee is meeting this week; David Danhauer will be part of this committee and will give an update at the next meeting. The name of the childcare committee will likely change to Family Life Committee. New Business DRE/CRE position update- this update was taken care of after Continuing Education (Please see above minute, under the Continuing Education section.) Alan Simms gave the Finance and Catholic School Subsidy update. Alan explained that the catholic school subsidy increase will gradually have all Parishes paying the same amount per student and that by the year 2014 this goal will be accomplished following the plan in place at this time. The subsidy will change depending on the number of children we have from our parish that are enrolled in the Catholic School System. There was discussion about how the former process of establishing Parish subsidy to the Catholic School System worked in comparison to the new way of assessing subsidy. Fr. Carl brought to our attention the revenue sheet that was with our board packet and we looked at what we need to do financially to play our part in helping to subsidize the Catholic School System. What is our plan to generate income for the Catholic School Subsidy? The revenue needed for this year is $189,077. We are currently at $126,000. David asked what percentage of our budget is going to Catholic School Subsidy. What are we willing to budget her at Sts. Joseph and Paul? Fr. Carl asked about ideas regarding an action plan to generate this revenue. The PPC thought that this should definitely go to the Finance Committee. Kay Beth and Alan spoke about possible fundraising ideas that have worked in other Parishes. Fr. Carl spoke of how we can sustain the subsidy in the future. He suggested an everyday approach to getting these revenue dollars. Through stewardship and mission we can move forward with this. We are called as a Church community to keep the fires burning at Sts. Joe and Paul. We must be on fire with our faith and help our brothers and sisters in Christ to be on fire as well, this will be key to generating the dollars needed. Tony had a couple of questions concerning the finance meeting minutes, specifically changing the locks and a parish audit. Fr. Carl stated that an audit usually takes place when a new priest comes to a Parish. There were questions about security issues at the office; the code numbers were scrambled to remedy this situation. The security door now has a new code. Ron Greene asked about the search for a new maintenance director, Phillip’s last day is 02-28-2009. We wish him well and will keep he and his family in prayer as he moves forward with his business. Committee Reports – Please refer to reports included in PPC packets. Closing Prayer led by Fr. Carl. IX. Prayer leader for next month: Carol Alvey Continuing education leader: John Wells Meeting adjourned at 8:25, next meeting March 2nd at 6:30. GOD BLESS!
