Opening Prayer: Tony Kraus led us in a decade of the rosary in honor of the rosary and tomorrow being the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary. New Secretary: Tony read from the Parish Pastoral Council Guidelines regarding the selection of a secretary. It was decided that since 6 members were absent the committee would wait until next month’s meeting to select a new secretary. Carol Alvey and Laura Baker were suggested as possibilities. Approval of Previous Minutes: The committee discussed the September 2008 committee minutes with an addendum concerning the procedure in which the new Mass times would be presented to the parish. Ron Greene said that he had left the previous PPC meeting believing the parish would be polled regarding the 2 mass time change options; David Danhauer also mentioned he was surprised when it was announced at Mass that the schedule had been set and the parishioners were being asked to sign up for new Mass times. Lavida Mischel, Sacred Liturgy Chairperson, had submitted an email clarifying the process, which was attached to the September minutes. Tony apologized for not clarifying at the end of last month’s meeting the exact procedure. Fr. Carl further explained Lavida’s email. Fr. Carl asked the committee what he needed to do to make the situation right, and the committee said that they were fine with the clarification. David made the motion to approve the minutes with the addendum; Debbie Luedke seconded the motion; Mike Hagan third. Education: Since John Wells was supposed to lead the education piece at the meeting and he was not present, the education piece was tabled for next month’s meeting. Hispanic Ministry & Youth Ministry Update: Chris gave a report on Hispanic Ministry. They are preparing for a retreat in November. There will be a youth retreat on October 18. The Time Dr. ministry is going well, Lewisport Bible study group is also going. He also reported on the home visits that he does. The Hispanic RCIA participants are scheduled to come into the Church at Easter. Fr. Carl suggested contacting Brescia University to see about using their chapel for Hispanic Holy Week opportunities/activities. Chris will follow-up with this. Ron asked Chris about the retreat and the Faith Formation classes for the children. Ken gave a report on CHRISTeens Youth ministry. The youth are being challenged, both groups have been meeting together which was hard at first, but doing better with it. Two weeks ago Ken felt tested, wondering if this is where he should be. Ken is challenging them spiritually. The kids have come together, like a family; they are seeing Jesus as Friend, Savior & Warrior. Youth want to be involved in and take ownership of the 6pm Mass. David asked if Ken had a relationship with counselors or principals of high schools and if Ken has a degree or training in counseling. Ken has been going to visit schools, local games & lunch at the schools. Ken is certified to teach suicide prevention and will be meeting with the principals to discuss presenting to the teachers. Ken has 2 more internships before he will complete his Master’s degree in counseling. Tom Hayden asked about Confirmation Preparation, specifically in regards to 7th grade Catholic School students, who don’t receive confirmation preparation until 8th grade. Ken will be making the info that he is teaching at Faith Formation available to the 7th & 8th grade Catholic School Students/Parents. The retreats will also cover the catechesis for confirmation. It was discussed that we recommend at a diocesan level & to the Owensboro Catholic Schools that confirmation preparation be taught at 7th grade because many parishes in Owensboro are combining 7th & 8th grade for confirmation every other year. This is also to be put on next month’s agenda. Stewardship/Finance Update: Alan reminded the committee about A Night Under the Stars to be held November 8th at 7pm in the Parish Hall. The meal will be simpler this year to make it more open to all parishioners. He encouraged all PPC members to attend and also to nominate someone if they haven’t already done so. It was discussed we would announce the winners prior to the evening. (November2nd bulletin). Please note: It was later decided, based on the recommendation of Stewardship Committee, and approved by Fr. Carl, that the winners won’t be announced until that evening. Alan discussed the budget/finance report. The last 2 weeks we have been over budget for income. The parish has a history of a slow start the 1st quarter of the fiscal year. Tom asked about the credit we have in some of the accounts. April explained the credits. Good Samaritan Home Update: Alan has been in discussion with James in Bowling Green about refugee ministry. We don’t have to commit to everything. We are still waiting on Washington. Mary Danhauer will be moving out of the Good Samaritan Home, & it will be vacant again. Fr. Carl asked for the committee’s permission to make the decision that if the need to allow someone to live there can be decided by him if that need arises. (On a monthly basis). David suggested asking St. Vincent de Paul Society to help screen the people that would possibly need this help. Tony brought up the question of legalities of being a landlord. Fr. Carl stated for the record, “That we will continue with the refugee ministry (whether it be abroad or local) until we are otherwise notified. Scrip Program: Alan informed the committee that 23 reloadable gift cards had been purchased. Keith Osborne, from the Scrip office will be at Mass 10/11-10/12. We have parishioners selling Scrip cards at Mass each weekend at this time. Tom stated that the Mass times change was presented to the parish well. Some people misunderstand the Scrip program; he suggested that we explain it better. It will take time to build the program. Election & Nomination Process: An Adhoc Committee will be selected to review the process next month when more members are present. Parish Hall Cleanup Proposal: This will be given to Building & Grounds Committee to ask for input & organizing of cleanup after parish events. Childcare: The option of providing childcare at Mass was discussed. A letter from Amanda Davis was in the packets. It was suggested maybe we could start a trial at 10am Mass. Possible legalities were also discussed. This will be given to Education Committee to help by consulting with Josh & Amanda Davis. This could give Family Life Committee a purpose. Tony or Tom will contact Amanda, thanking her for the letter. Fr. Carl will contact the Josh & Amanda Davis and Ryann & Kim Welborn to invite them to help with this. David will facilitate with them. We need to contact other parishes that offer this to see the process for starting this program. Mike Hagan asked about a dedicated area with beds etc..., more information needs to be gathered. The committee closed with prayer. The committee had a closed session at this time. Chris & Kay Beth were excused from the meeting.
